As far as we are concerned, the region around the city of Carmelo is Uruguay's best kept secret. The region offers a rich culture and it is a booming wine region. This place dates from 1909, and is the best place to spend the night in Carmelo. The atmosphere here is unique and special and you will imagine yourself back in simpler times. On the estate there are even original vehicles and agricultural machinery from this time. Besides Argentina and Chile, Uruguay is also a real wine country. In Carmelo the better wines of Uruguay are produced. The local Uruguayan Tannat wine is made from a red grape from southwestern France that was brought to Uruguay in the 19th century. The Tannat is now seen as a national grape. Be sure to visit a winery during your tour in Uruguay and enjoy the better wines during dinner in the evening.

In the east of the country lies the town of Mariscala. One of the nicest places to spend the night here is Posada el Balcon del Abra. Here you can make beautiful trekkings on foot or on horseback where you will experience the real rural feeling of Uruguay.

It will probably not be a surprise that Uruguay is an excellent country for horseback riding. Explore the open plains of the countryside, discover the country's various natural parks on horseback or make a ride along the beach at sunset. Horseback riding in Uruguay is actually possible everywhere and definitely recommended!
