You will get acquainted with Uruguay's rural life where you can enjoy good wines, tranquility and special accommodations. You will drive back to the coast where you will visit three different, but all special, coastal towns. Punta del Este, your last destination, is known for the enchanting beautiful sunsets that you can experience here. A perfect end to this unique journey.

Travel itinerary

Day 1: Amsterdam - Montevideo

Today your Unique Journey through Uruguay starts! First, you will board your intercontinental flight to Montevideo in Amsterdam. Once you arrived here, our local staff will be ready to take you to your hotel. You will stay at the hotel Sofitel Montevideo. This hotel is without a doubt one of the most luxurious hotels in Montevideo. Beautifully located and situated in a unique historic building from 1912. It is already late when you arrive at the hotel. Let yourself be guided to your room and get into the comfortable bed for a good night's sleep.

Day 2: Montevideo

Enjoy a delicious breakfast in the morning before heading into town for a city walk with a private guide. Your guide will take you to the old town where you will encounter an interesting mix of classic and modern. You will visit Matriz Square, Montevideo Cathedral and the Independence Square. After a guided tour through the different districts of the city you will end the walk in the famous Mercado del Puerto where the locals do their groceries. It is also an excellent place to have a good steak for lunch. At lunchtime the staff from the surrounding offices come here to have lunch and that creates a nice atmosphere.

Day 3: Montevideo - Colonia 

(approx. 190 km | 3 hour drive)
After breakfast a rental car will be waiting for you to explore Uruguay for the rest of the days. Today you will drive in about 3 hours to Colonia along the beautiful coast. You will stay at the Charco Hotel. Up to the smallest details they strive for perfection here. The rooms are very spacious and have a refined design. Combine this with the beautiful view of the river, the pleasant atmosphere and the professional staff and you are guaranteed a very pleasant stay.

Day 4: Colonia del Sacramento

Let yourself be surprised by the beauty of the colonial town of Colonia del Sacramento which has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1995. It seems as if you are going back in the seventeenth century. The center is a melting pot of typical Portuguese and Spanish low buildings. The streets are irregularly paved with cobblestones of different sizes. Enjoy a drink on one of the terraces, climb the 'Faro' of the city, a lighthouse from the 19th century and end your day with a beautiful sunset at the pier.

Day 5: Colonia del Sacramento - Carmelo

(approx. 90 km | 2 hour drive)
A new day, a new place. Today you will drive to Carmelo, about 2 hours west of Colonia del Sacramento. The peaceful surroundings of Carmelo have beautiful nature and are internationally known for their vineyards and bodegas. It is an excellent place to enjoy the surroundings by bike and taste the wine. You will stay in Narbona Wine Lodge, this place dates from 1909. The atmosphere here is unique and special and you will feel as if you are back in simpler times. On the estate there are even original vehicles and agricultural machinery from this time. Unique black and white photographs in the only five boutique hotel rooms will give you a good impression of the rich history of Narbona. In the evening, enjoy the fantastic, unpretentious dishes from the country kitchen which the restaurant serves. Think of colorful salads, soups, local meats, homemade pasta and many more delicacies. Enjoy this wonderful day.

Day 6: Carmelo

In Carmelo the better wines of Uruguay are produced. The local Uruguayan Tannat wine is made from a red grape from southwestern France that was brought to Uruguay in the 19th century. The Tannat is now seen as a national grape. Today is dedicated to wine and you will therefore visit the place where the first wine in Uruguay was made by the Jesuits. You will also visit two different wineries where you will get a guided tour of the terrain and explanation about the process of making wine. You will end each visit with a wine tasting, which will also include various food items. After the visits you will be brought back to your hotel.

Day 7: Carmelo - Mariscala

(approx. 400 km | 6.5 hour drive)
Start this morning with a good breakfast in the beautiful garden of your accommodation. When you are ready, you drive on to the surroundings of Mariscala. Today you will be on the road all day. During this drive you will drive through the region of Durazno, which means peach in Spanish. Enjoy the tranquility in a beautiful rural setting. On this route you will also find Cerro Arequita, a beautiful area of hills, mountains and rivers. At the end of the day you will arrive at your accommodation, located in a hilly area, a few minute drive from the city of Mariscala.

Day 8: Mariscala

Today you have the time to enjoy the beautiful surroundings of Mariscala. Here you can make beautiful walks by foot or on horseback where you will experience the real rural feeling of Uruguay. Of course you can also go out exploring by yourself with your rental car.

Day 9: Mariscala - Rocha

(approx. 150 km | 3 hour drive)
After a quiet day in the inland, you will drive towards the coast again today. These days you will stay at Estancia Guardia del Monte. This estancia is still in full operation and is located near the beautiful Castillos lake. It is an excellent base for bird watching and horseback riding. Enjoy the surroundings and the hospitality of the owners of the Estancia.

Day 10: Rocha

Not far from your accommodation the charming fishing village of Cabo Polonio is located. It is situated in the dunes of a natural park and it is secluded from the outside world. You can only reach this old fishing village by foot or by all-terrain vehicle. The village is characterized by the lighthouse, the gigantic colony of sea lions and a single supermarket. The surroundings are great; right near the beach and everywhere you look you can see the dunes. Enjoy your lunch at one of the small restaurants, where the fish is served straight from the sea. Afterwards you will be brought back to your hotel.

Day 11: Rocha - José Ignacio

(approx. 120 km | 2 houd drive)
Today you will drive further to the coast of Uruguay, to José Ignacio, where you will find the so-called 'barefoot luxury'. Enjoyment is written in capital letters in this region. The inhabitants of José Ignacio sleep late, enjoy themselves with family and friends on the beach and are very friendly. You will stay in Playa Vik, a small accommodation with only 12 rooms, all with different interiors. The estate of this Estancia has 4,000 hectares. More than twenty Uruguayan, foreign artists and renowned architects have contributed to the design and furnishing of the estancia.

Day 12 & 13: José Ignacio

Enjoy a few days off in the lovely town of José Ignacio. Here you can relax in beautiful surroundings while not being far from a good glass of wine at one of the excellent restaurants and relax by the hotel swimming pool. José Ignacio is filled with a very nice and relaxed atmosphere.

Day 14: José Ignacio - Punta del Este

(approx. 30 km | 30 min. drive)
Today you will make a short drive to Punta del Este. Punta del Este is a popular destination in Uruguay. It is also known as the St. Tropez of South America, thanks to its beautiful beaches, beautiful hotels and better restaurants and shops. You drive along a beautiful promenade with palm trees into the city. Here you will also find the harbor with beautiful luxury yachts. You will stay in Fasano Las Piedras, which was designed by the world famous architect Isay Weinfeld. The most perfect location has been chosen; near the nightlife, but also near the beaches of La Barra.

Day 15: Punta del Este

Today you have a day off. On one of the city's beautiful beaches the 1982 work of art 'Mano de Punta del Este' (the hand/fingers) by the Chilean artist Mario Irarrázabal is located. He made this work of art as a warning for the swimmers and now it is an important part of the cityscape. There are various activities to do, such as whale watching, cycling and walking. Would you like to enjoy the real jet set life for a while? Good restaurants and busy outdoor cafes make this place great during summer.

Day 16: Punta del Este - Montevideo - Amsterdam

Today your Unique Journey through Uruguay unfortunately comes to an end. You drive to Montevideo airport (approx. 120 km | 2 hour drive), where you drop off your rental car. At the airport you will board your intercontinental flight to Amsterdam. Here you will arrive the next day.

Day 17: Amsterdam

Today you will arrive in Amsterdam. The end of your unique journey.
