Travel description

Day 1: Amsterdam - Managua

Your journey through Nicaragua starts this day. From Amsterdam, you will fly with an intercontinental flight to the capital of Nicaragua, Managua. Once you arrive here, one of our local staff will pick you up and bring you to your accommodation in Managua (approx. 25-minute drive).

Day 2: Managua - León

In the morning you will be picked up at your hotel and taken to your accommodation in León. León is the former capital and has a rich history. You will stay in a hotel, built in an old monastery, located in the centre of León. In the afternoon you will get to know the city together with a guide. Along the way, you will get acquainted with murals from the Revolution, baroque and neoclassical churches and an art museum with works by internationally renowned artists. Take a look at the fruit and vegetable market. To end the city walk, climb on the roof of the impressive cathedral, from where you'll have a magnificent view of the colonial city with the volcanic chain in the distance.

Day 3: León

In the morning you will depart to the foot of the Cerro Negro volcano with your guide. From here you will take a walk up to about 700 meters above sea level. Walking over the lava bed you will reach the crater, where you will encounter the different natural colours, yellow, red, green and white. From here you can see the volcanic chain leading to the Pacific Ocean. After you have taken in the surroundings, it is time for the descent by sliding over the fine volcanic sand. After this, you will be brought back to your hotel in León. The afternoon is for leisure. You can explore the city further on your own. For example, visit the impressive ruins of León Viejo, which are on the list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Stroll through the pleasant working-class neighbourhood of El Laborío. Furthermore, the old house of the great poet and writer Ruben Darío is located here, which is now a museum.

Day 4: León - Laguna de Apoyo

In the morning you will say goodbye to the city of León and continue your journey to the Laguna de Apoyo. On the way, you will visit the National Park 'Volcán Masaya', known for its beauty and untouched nature. Visit the museum located at the entrance to the park. Here you will learn and see more about the workings of the active volcanoes. Afterwards, you can drive to the National Market of Arts and Crafts in Masaya, a town known for its folklore. When you have seen everything, you will drive on to your accommodation in the nature reserve Laguna de Apoyo. This reserve is located between the cities of Granada and Masaya and is known as the lake with the cleanest water of Nicaragua. You can have a wonderful stay around this breathtaking piece of nature. You will stay in the small-scale boutique hotel Apoyo Lodge, located on the shores of Lake Apoyo. Here you are invited to enjoy a relaxing stay. The meals served here are vegan. From the lodge, you can enjoy beautiful views of the lake.

Day 5: Laguna de Apoyo - Granada

This day you will travel further to Granada. In the afternoon a city tour is planned. You will walk through the historic centre of Granada with a private guide. The city is the colonial jewel of Central America, was founded in 1524 by Hernández de Córdoba and is the oldest colonial city on the mainland of Latin America. For a long time, it was the most important city in Nicaragua and the city is full of architecture from colonial and neoclassical times. You will visit the San Francisco church and monastery, which were built in 1529. You will also visit the La Merced church, which you can climb to enjoy the beautiful views of the city, Lake Nicaragua and the Mombacho volcano. The last stop is in the oldest part of town, where you will visit the Xalteva church and the old city wall.

Day 6: Granada 

This day is at your leisure, so you can stroll through the city on your own. The pastel-coloured cottages and stately classical buildings invite you to take a long walk, with a beautiful sunset at the end of Lake Nicaragua.

Day 7: Granada - Las Isletas

Today you will continue your journey to Las Isletas, located just a few minutes by boat from Granada. The eruptions of the Mombacho volcano have created more than 300 islands in Lake Granada. You will stay on one of the islands, at the Jicaro Island lodge. This ecolodge is a private island where only the guests of the ecolodge can come. You will stay in your own casita, which is situated on the edge of the lake. It is a beacon of peace! During construction, mature trees and natural forms of the island have been preserved. Because the casitas stand above the ground so they will not disturb the island, they feel like a part of it. The buildings and furniture are made of wood that comes from trees that were toppled over by Hurricane Felix. The restaurant uses local products and supports projects that produce food for the restaurant and the local population in a sustainable way.

Day 8: Las Isletas

This day you can relax while enjoying a massage, yoga class or during a tasty meal in the restaurant. You can also explore the island, which has a beautiful jungle setting.

Day 9: Las Isletas - Little Corn Island

Today you will travel to the Caribbean coast of Nicaragua. From Jicaro you will sail to Granada, from where you will be taken to Managua airport. Here you will board a domestic flight to Corn Island. Once you arrive here you will be taken by boat to your accommodation, where you will stay the coming nights. You will stay at the Yemaya Island Hideaway, surrounded by coconut palms and lush jungle, located on the north side of Little Corn Island. The cabanas of the accommodation are located on the beach and overlook the Caribbean Sea.

Day 10 to day 12: Little Corn Island

These days are at your leisure and you can enjoy the Caribbean coast. The Caribbean coast of Nicaragua is home to beautiful beaches, dense jungles and beautiful secluded islands surrounded by the turquoise sea. Once upon a time, this was a haven for pirates and buccaneers. Because of this, the area has a rich and interesting history that is reflected in the colourful population that lives here. Many of the locals are descendants of British gold diggers and freed slaves. Corn Island offers an idyllic Caribbean retreat, with very friendly locals. In addition, the underwater world has plenty to offer. You can snorkel and dive here.

Day 13: Little Corn - Managua

At the end of the morning, you will be taken by boat to Little Corn airport, from where you will take a domestic flight to Managua. Once there you will be taken to your accommodation.

Day 14: Managua - Amsterdam

Your tour of Nicaragua comes to an end this day. You will be taken to Managua airport, from where you will board your intercontinental flight to Amsterdam.

Day 15: Amsterdam

You arrive in Amsterdam today.
