Surprising and vibrant
Medellín, a metropolis with over 5 million inhabitants, has a turbulent past. After drug baron Pablo Escobar, who was in control of the city during the 80's, was killed and his drug gang was defeated, slowly but surely a different wind began to blow. Numerous initiatives were started to make life in Medellín more attractive. The result? A great vibrant city that is certainly worth a visit!
In the fertile and mountainous Aburrá valley lies the town of Medellín, the capital of the Antioquia region. Surrounded by mountains and situated at about 1,500 meters altitude, the city has a spring-like climate throughout the year with an average temperature of about 22°C. Medellin has had many different names since its foundation. Since 2 November 1675, it has remained unchanged with the name 'Villa de Nuestra Señora de la Candelaria de Medellín', later abbreviated to Medellín.
Medellín has a very innovative public transport system, where hyper modern monorails connect with trams, buses and cable lifts. Old, abandoned buildings in the city were renovated and given a new function. In addition, numerous socio-cultural initiatives were started for and by the population in the fields of art, dance, singing and sports. As a result, Medellín was voted the most innovative city in the world by the influential non-profit organization Urban Land Institute in 2013. Medellín defeated New York and Tel Aviv and the public spaces in particular were praised. There are many parks and the city has a vibrant cultural life. There are libraries, the Museo de Arte Moderno (MAMM), other museums and various cultural events take place in the city. Medellín has developed into an industrial trading city for textiles and cut flowers.
