Patagonia Chile

Unpolished beauty

The Torres del Paine National Park is considered the heart of Chilean Patagonia. A protected natural area of 180,000 hectares, known not only for its unique flora and fauna, but also for its spectacular landscapes of rocks, glaciers, lakes, forests and rivers. However, there is so much more to see in this rough and remote part of Chile.

Patagonia, kingdom of giants

The first navigation maps of 'the New World' indicated Patagonia with the name of the Latin legend; 'Regio Gigantum' (region of giants). The few survivors of the Magellan expedition - the first expedition around the earth 1519/1522 - said that this area was populated by giants. Ferdinand Magelhaes described the indigenous inhabitants as 'Patagão'. Patagonia still owes its name to this. With this, a legend was born that Patagonia was the land of giants. Later, fossils of the 'Argentinosaurus' (the largest dinosaur ever) were excavated in Patagonia.

Today, it is assumed that Patagonia is indeed the 'kingdom of giants', inspired by the Torres del Paine massif, Mountain Fitz Roy, the South Chilean ice fields and the mammoth glacier Perito Moreno. The impressive expanse of the landscape, with its beautiful colours and its rough, yet beautiful shapes, will give you the feeling that all this comes from another world or that this is the gateway to another world. Not only are the skies, lakes, rivers and fjords here in the most extraordinary shades of blue, the ice of the glaciers also has an ever-changing colour blue, as if the colour could form the rainbow by itself.
