The largest part of Bolivia is located on the plateau of the Andes. This ensures that the special Andean culture in Bolivia is still alive. What not many people know however, is that the Andes also go over here to a lower tropical part with in the north the Amazon basin.
Lake Titicaca is known for its beautiful natural surroundings. But this is not the only thing, Lake Titicaca is also very important for the Andean culture! Legend has it that the first Inca ruler, from the island Isla del Sol, went to the Sacred Valley in Peru to found a city from where he would rule his future empire. The region of Lake Titicaca is also the center of the once very powerful Tiwanaku culture.
This 'holy' village is situated on the banks of the Bolivian side of Lake Titicaca. The Virgin of Copacabana (La Virgen de la Candelaria) is patron of Bolivia and many miracles are attributed to her. This city is much less known than the beach of the same name in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. What turns out is that this famous beach is named after this village. Legend has it that a grateful Brazilian fisherman who was rescued from the storm by the Virgin of Copacabana named the beach of Copacabana hereafter. Copacabana is also home to a number of pre-Inca holy places, such as the colonial churches of Pomata and Juli and the temple.
From Copacabana you can explore the ancient temples of Isla del Sol and Lake Titicaca. Isla del Sol is also called the holy Inca island. The Incas believed that the sun and the founders of the Inca Empire, Manko Kapac and Mama Ocllo, were born here. That's why the sun temple Pilcocaina is also located here.
