Tough boatwoman with a story

| Johan van Rijswijck

From the first moment I was in contact with Eva, I felt that we were going to do something special. During the conversation we had by phone, I felt her energy. Eva is open, doesn't mince words and knows what she wants. Eva wanted to travel to Antarctica and to the rugged and unspoilt Patagonia with her husband Huib. Of course we wanted to help.

Gente Mágica: Johan in conversation with Eva van Dijk - Bijl

On Monday morning, 5 April, at 11:00 a.m. (Easter Monday), Johan will have an online conversation with Eva about her extraordinary trip to Patagonia and Antarctica. She will also tell her story about climate change using the presentation she received from the scientist and guide on the Antarctica expedition. The ferry to Tiengemeten

Together with her husband Huib Bijl, Eva runs the round-trip boat company De Hoeksche Vaart, which connects the nature island of Tiengemeten with the rest of the world. Running a canal tour company and ferry service means hard work and long days. Yet Huib and Eva feel privileged, because they live and work in a unique part of the Netherlands.

An unforgettable journey to the Carretera Austral and Antarctica

Because the work at home never stops, travelling is the only way to get a break. And they love to travel. Preferably to the most beautiful landscapes in the most remote parts of our planet. In consultation with Eva, I decided to plan a trip along the Carretera Austral, one of the most beautiful car routes in the world. The motorway that is unpaved for the most part is interrupted several times by waterways that have to be crossed by ferry. For a skipper couple like Eva and Huib, these ferry services abroad are of course the cherries on the cake. After the Carretera Austral, they would fly to Antarctica to discover the Antarctic Peninsula on board the Magellan Explorer.

A detailed report of their journey

During and after the trip, Eva writes down their adventrues in detail. The open and uninhibited way in which she tells her story reminds me of a modern version of Alice in Wonderland.

The story about climate change

Back in the Netherlands, Eva has a mission. On board the Magellan Explorer of Antarctica21, they not only get to know the pristine wilderness of Antarctica. The scientists who are accompanying them on this trip also tell them about the negative consequences of climate change. In a fragile ecosystem such as that of the South Pole, this is the first thing that becomes apparent. Eva wants to share this story with the rest of the world so that we all become aware of the fact that we need to treat our planet in a much more sustainable manner. So that the generations that follow us can also enjoy all the natural riches that the earth has to offer in the same way.
