El Chaltén is a small mountain village in the south of Patagonia, situated in the National Park Los Glaciares. It has only existed since 1985 and quickly became a popular destination for fanatical hikers and mountaineers trying to reach the peaks of the Fitz Roy and the Cerro Torre. However, you don't have to be a real mountaineer or experienced walker to enjoy the beauty of Patagonia.
Hiking for everyone
Walking is the highlight of El Chaltén. This place is referred to as the walking paradise of Patagonia. Whether you are a beginner or an experienced hiker, there are plenty of hiking trails through primeval forests and along lagoons, rivers and whimsical glaciers.
There is much more to do
If you do not only want to hike, but also want to explore the surroundings in a different way, then that is no problem at all. Of course, there is much more to do in this nature rich environment.
The lakes and rivers near El Chaltén have been populated by brown and rainbow trout for decades and it is a perfect place for spawning the Chinook salmon. With its deep wells and strong currents, the Río de las Vueltas offers a great fishing spot. Do not forget that the environment also contributes to an unforgettable experience. You will be accompanied by a guide who can take care of all the equipment.
For once, don't walk, but go for a ride on your bike. In the surroundings you will find several routes that are easy to cycle. So, you can enjoy the beautiful views and nature. You can choose to rent a mountain bike and go out on your own, but you can also go out with a guide.
From the water you can take in the surroundings in a different way. It is not necessary that you have experience with kayaking, but a reasonable condition is important. From the water you have a spectacular view of the Fitz Roy and during the trip you sail along forests, mountains and glaciers.
The area around El Chaltén is known for rock climbing as well as hiking. If you are a real adventurer, then this is a great challenge. You can also come here as a beginner climber. We will look at your needs and your experience and based on that a plan will be made. Don't forget to enjoy this special experience.
Staying the night
Because El Chaltén only exists since 1985, the supply of accommodation and hotels is relatively small. Slowly we see the possibilities grow and this year two unique accommodations open in this great area.
Chalten Camp is nestled in the indigenous forest, between Rio de las Vueltas and a huge granite wall, past the crowds and the lights. The centre is only 3.2 kilometres away and requires 15-minute drive or 45-minute walk.
Special about this accommodation is that you sleep in a dome, a dome-shaped tent. This way you will be close to nature, but you will enjoy the necessary luxury of a hotel room. The tents are 26m2 in size and are fully equipped with a queen size bed, bathroom with hot water, electricity and an atmospheric decoration. All domes have a large 'window' that offers a panoramic view of the Fitz Roy.
Explora El Chaltén
Explora's accommodation is completely surrounded by the rugged nature of Patagonia and is about 17 kilometres from the centre of El Chaltén. Explora El Chaltén offers 17 standard rooms and 3 suites, all with views of the Electric Valley and Marconi Glacier. The restaurant's menu is inspired by Argentine Patagonia and in the evening, you can relax in the spa after a long walk.
Explora has 4 other hotels in different places in South America, all of which have proven to be unique and comfortable hotels with excellent service. We are therefore delighted that Explora is expanding its portfolio with accommodation in El Chaltén.
