Alone at the Iguaçu Falls

| Johan van Rijswijck

It is seven o'clock in the morning and I am on my way out. As soon as I step outside, I hear the sounds of the Mata Atlantica rainforest. I hear some birds singing and a thunderous noise in the background. It is the thundering noise that I am on my way to. I am staying at the Belmond Hotel das Cataratas. This is the only hotel that is located in the Iguaçu National Park, within walking distance of the falls.

A magical experience

At this time the national park is still closed to regular visitors. Because the Hotel das Cataratas is located in the national park, only the guests of the hotel have the opportunity to visit Iguaçu Falls this early in the morning. Of course, I don't want to miss this opportunity and start my walk to the waterfalls.

When I arrive at the falls, I see that I am really the only one. I have this impressive natural spectacle all to myself. It almost feels like a magical experience. The rising sun illuminates the water that pours down from the Argentine side. I look around me at the impressive nature.

In the middle of the natural beauty

There is a path that eventually leads me to the middle of the falls. I take my time. I keep thinking that the latest view is even more beautiful than all the ones before. I still haven't met anyone else here. I feel privileged to have this unique experience. After half an hour, I see some of my travel companions coming. They have big smiles on their faces. They too are enjoying this unforgettable moment.

The Waterfalls of Iguaçu

The Waterfalls of Iguaçu consist of more than 270 waterfalls. This natural spectacle is located at the triple-border point, which is shared by Brazil, Argentina and Paraguay. In terms of water mass, Iguaçu Falls is considered the largest waterfalls in the world.

Staying at Belmond das Cataratas

The beautiful pink, Portuguese colonial-style hotel is the only hotel located in the Foz do Iguaçu National Park. The hotel opened its doors for the first time in 1958. In 2007, it was completely renovated by Belmond Hotels. Without a doubt, this is one of the most spectacularly located hotels in the world.
